about

This is the original demo for "Prison Song."

It was written and recorded in one night with a borrowed guitar. It was always intended for Rachel Burke to sing, I was just singing it here as a placeholder. The next day, I showed it to Rachel, who went on to sing it on the album with her golden-sweet tone.

Rachel's performance would imbue the song with more innocence (and consequently cognitive dissonance) than was present on this demo. And I credit her for why the song is loved. The song is about a number of things, but vulnerability is chief among them.

Important note: both recordings feature the same guitar recording. They are identical; the only thing that changed is the voice. It is remarkable how different they feel, though.

Also worth noting: We ultimately changed the last line from "Will you let me down?" to "I know I let you down." More anguish in the revision.
